Project Details
Summary
The user problem was how can user interactive and user experience design help with patients and caregivers who may have mild anxieties when it comes to receiving medical care at a hospital.
Results
Before this project, I had assumed my research would reiterate specifics I had already known about color psychology, but I was surprised about the results of the gamification within the prototype that many were interested in.
Constraints
I gave myself 2-3 months, so there were time constraints when it came to usability testing specifically, as users were using surveys to complete tasks on their own time.
Things I Did
This project addressed the need for human-centered design in high-anxiety healthcare environments. While passionate designers often rush to results, my primary goal was to intentionally slow down, focusing on a deep-dive process to ensure the solution was truly evidence-based. Research revealed that patient and staff anxiety is significantly impacted by facility design, color choices, and the administrative process, with existing digital wayfinding solutions often being underutilized.
My unique solution, Healthway Mobile Application, centered on gamification to reduce patient anxiety during hospital visits. By incorporating augmented reality and point-based navigation into the app, I shifted the user's focus from waiting and stress to engagement. The final high-fidelity prototype was validated through user testing, confirming that the gamification concept was not only highly desirable but also provided a clear and concise usability route, showcasing a "blue ocean" opportunity for future digital healthcare solutions.
